Teaching Our Children

The education of our children in the Lord is primarily the responsibility of parents. The role of the church is to supplement and encourage the work of the family in the spiritual development of our children. We consider it vital that both men and women serve as teachers and role models to our children. If you have school age children you can be assured that you will be asked at some point to participate in our children's Sunday School program, if not as a teacher then as an assistant to the teacher. There are no "permanent teachers." Each rotation lasts only five months. Not only is serving in this way a great ministry to the church, it is also a great way to get to know the next generation and their families.

Principles of Children's Spiritual Training

1. A child's spiritual growth and training of children is primarily the responsiblity of the parents.

2. We believe God also uses a number of secondary means to bring about spiritual growth in children. These include the local church, Christian schools, and parachurch organizations such as Young Life, AWANA, Christian Service Brigade, and Child Evangelism Fellowship.

3. The role of the church is to supplement the parents' teaching of the child, to equip the parents for their task and to provide meaningful programs which promote these goals.

4. Within each family, the father bears the primary responsibility for the spiritual training of the children. In families where there is no male presence, the church will provide added input and support. Tools for families to use are: prayer, Children's Bible books and videos, Camping trips and family oriented activities, and participation in Sunday School.

5. Teaching duties at church should be shared so that no one is prevented (even by their choice) from regular participation in the worship services or adult learning opportunities.
